Physical Activity, Discipline, Modesty, Humility

These are all the traditional benefits of learning a martial art. While the other sections depict what makes BJJ different in terms of benefits, it is worth mentioning that learning BJJ also gives similar benefits as learning most other martial arts.

Physical Activity

BJJ is a great physical activity for kids. It's a great exercise that combines cardio, resistance training and working on mobility and body awareness. It gets kids to be physically active, moving around a lot to improve their mobility through lots of different movements rolling on the mats.

Grappling also requires a lot of coordination using the whole body, not only in terms of all the movements, but also in using your feet dexterously as well as your arms and hands.

Discipline, Modesty, Humility, Concentration and Focus

Martial arts encourages discipline, modesty, humility, concentration and focus. BJJ is no different to that!

  1. Self-discipline is the ability to control one’s emotions, impulses, desires and behaviour. It is being able to resist the desire for instant gratification in favour of gaining the long-term satisfaction and fulfillment from achieving higher and more meaningful goals. BJJ takes a while to learn and in order to improve. Hence, most kids will learn that if they don't practice and train, they will not improve as much as other kids.

  2. Modesty and humility are constant reminders to kids who practice BJJ, as there are so many times a smaller kid are able to win. The constant reminder to kids to keep a beginners mindset with a humble mindset is invaluable.

  3. Lastly, BJJ also requires kids to learn how to concentrate and focus. As an immersive sport, losing concentration will allow their partner to seize the opportunity and pull off good moves!
